I have a serious question – where does everyone get this 5am early workout spark to suddenly lace up their sneakers and hit the streets? When I tell you I set my alarm for the break of dawn EVERY morning saying today will be the day, the snooze button overtakes my will to run (shocking, I know). Especially living in cold and snowy Boston now, who in their right mind wants to get out there before the sun is even up?! Not me, I’ll tell you that much.
But, it seems every other marathoner is out there doing that. My question is really just simply – HOW. SERIOUSLY. I’ve slept with pre-workout supplement almost quite literally in my hand, next to my nightly water bottle. I’ve asked my boyfriend to shake me awake until I actually remove myself from under the covers – to which I crawl right back under once he departs to catch his morning ride.
I’d also love to say I will get home after work and run, but that’s been even more of a struggle (even more so after I ran the Chicago marathon a few months ago). For one, I live in a busy suburb of the city. No 4’11” female wants to willingly gallivant through the neighborhood after dark with her iPhone and Garmin watch. Mind as well slap a target on my back before I head out there, amiright?
Also, often times I don’t get home from my job until earliest 8:30 PM – so I’m pretty beat on top of it being this grandmother’s bedtime.
With ALL of that being said, my early nights and pure exhaustion is mostly stemming from NOT finding time to run! It’s an IRONIC, VICIOUS cycle!
So, I ask you, runner friends, what is the best way to get your butt out the door in the mornings? What is your game changer?
Sincerely – A Marathoner Who Also Loves Sleeping.
