I hadn’t run this race before, but had heard amazing things about the course, the logistics and the cause. I also was so excited it was a local race – there’s just something satisfying about being home the night before a race instead of a hotel or what-not. Know what I’m saying?
The race itself happens in both LA and Boston, with its cause benefiting law enforcement officials who have lost their lives in the line of duty. I was proud to be a part of something so significant (on Memorial Day none-the-less). The finisher’s medal has a unique feature too – the center portion is filled with a magnetic coin (that you could choose which law enforcement branch you wanted to receive the coin for). I know ‘coins’ are something unique to each patrol unit, so thought that was a really clever touch.
The course itself has a couple of rolling hills, but nothing major. As we looped around Boston’s Seaport neighborhoods, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, over the Charles River and through the Financial and Theater Districts, I felt that this was a perfect race for someone who has never been to Boston. You get a full showing of some of the most desirable attractions you’d want to see if you were visiting Boston for the first time. Races that have these types of courses are my favorite – commonly, I’m a tourist in the city I’m racing in, so the more I can see the better. Also, I feel like it makes the time go by faster if I’m looking at things that excite me – but, I must just be a weirdo. I’ve accepted it.
I don’t really have too much to say about the expo (a friend went for me while I was at work), and my only gripe was I wish there was a couple more water stops – but I get it, volunteers are a rarity. Usually, I wouldn’t have needed as much water as I did – the sunburn got the best of me. The weather was perfect for running on the river – a breezy 60 degrees or so. I can imagine there are Memorial Day weekend years that are scorching for this race (and in fairness around 9 AM was the hottest), so might be a good move for the race directors in the future. It is a bit pricey, but I know shutting down that many main streets in Boston comes with a price and the cause is great – so I’m fine paying it. I did see that if you sign up now for next year and use the code RTREarlyBird the price drops from $120 to $75 which is a GREAT deal on this race – and for an extra $9 you can get race insurance and get the refund if you don’t know where you’ll be Memorial Day 2018….like me.
Those of you who saw my results from last weekend know I was ON a ROLL this week, and this race was no different. Sorry for the lack of photo opps on the course, but my goal was to come in under 2:10 and was cutting it close according to the Nike Run app – so, I wrapped it up at 2:05! There were a few points that I was overheating – honestly. I got a sunburn on Saturday at an outdoor concert, so I was feeling great with the exception of my body temperature. A couple of recovering jogs slowed me down – or else I feel I could have honestly broken 2 hours. I’m coming for ya, sub 2!!!
I’ve come so far this Winter and Spring with my running, and I feel a lot of it has come down to starting this blog and my trip to Australia. I have a renewed sense of accountability. I was fed up with feeling crummy, having no energy and hating how I looked in photos. I took a stand to how my life was going to look moving forward, and I’m so glad I did. I’ve cut almost a full half hour off of my best half time – more progress to come!
My goal this Summer is to run one race a month – so my next race will be the Narragansett Beer Running Festival in Easton, Massachusetts. I actually did this race once before in it’s Inaugural Year – I’m excited to see how it has evolved. Below is my running plan for the next few weeks – let me know if I’ll see you out there!
