Last week was HELL. I was sick, work was out of control and I fell behind on my race training. Story of my life.
I was able to get out and complete the Tufts 10K race Monday afternoon – a nice holiday jog around the Boston Commons. It really was such an amazingly inspirational day of women coming together and running. I was even surprised to see some men out there, showing their support. It was a good course too – relatively flat and along the Charles (my running go-to), as you alllll know already.
I thought what might be helpful (instead of a full race recap) is a list of helpful hints for future runners of the race! Check out some key tips if you’re looking to run the Tufts Health Plan 10k in the future.
1 – Parking – The site did recommend a parking lot SUPER close to Boston Garden, and I can see how that could be convenient for some people that aren’t from the city and want to be as close as possible to the action. I actually used the app SpotHero (a total life saver if you’re not a common city person too)! Not only can you put in an address and find the best garages surrounding that particular area, but you might even be able to find an option that won’t be connected to closed off streets. I couldn’t park in the recommended garage, as I needed to leave immediately after the race to go to work. I found one that got me in and out super easy.
2 – T-Shirts – This year, shirts were available after the race. I was able to snag my tee after I crossed the finish line (since I was too busy wandering beforehand). I usually don’t bother (only because I have so many t-shirts I could create a full bed set, no lie). But, I figured this one was special with the blog partnership and all – wanted to snag just a little memento.
3 – Pre-Race – The waves I found were super structured, and after a few minute wait we were off and running (no pun intended). They made an effort to make sure those taking the race seriously for training had their needs met, as well as those that were just there for fun. This race did fall into the category I so fondly refer to as ‘rookie race’ – there were a LOT of people walking amidst big crowds (on the left hand side instead of the right), stopping short, etc. Just not aware of runner ettiquete per say – if you’re looking for serious running, I’d add a minute to your goal time to make sure you’re right amongst others who are trying to PR with you! I did get tripped up and slowed down by quite a few walkers staying in the 9 minute mile grouping – but that tends to come with larger scale races like this one, and commodity races for not-so-serious fitness fanatics. Fair warning!
4 – Bib Pickup – I had my bib mailed to me, which was CLUTCH. I LOVE that races are doing this now – I did ask around a bit and people seemed to think the process was easy and streamlined!
5 – Water – Plenty of water stops along the way, more than I needed. Again, this is personal preference, so make sure to scope out the map beforehand.
The course was so fun and quick – weather wasn’t ideal (so muggy and rainy), so here’s to hoping its a bit better next year. Great way to kick off my Boston Marathon training!
So, here it is folks, 5+ months of grinding by yours truly. Let me know if I’ll see you at any of my upcoming races – including this weekend in Newport! Also, looking for a good half in March, any suggestions?
